Territorial Acknowledgement

The political science department acknowledges that ΢ÃÜÆƽâ stands in Lenapehoking, the Lenape People's ancestral territory. Dispossessed by William Penn's heirs, the majority of the Lenape eventually relocated to communities in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Ontario where they reside today as federally recognized sovereign Nations.

΢ÃÜÆƽâ is located in "Lenapehoking," the traditional homelands of the Lenape that includes Delaware, New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, and southern New York. We honor the Native inhabitants of these lands and revere their historic and everlasting relationships with this land.

William Penn's heirs dispossessed the Lenape with the Walking Purchase of 1737. After violent conflicts forced the Lenape People from their homelands, the majority of Lenape communities settled in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Ontario where they live today as federally recognized sovereign Nations. Those of us who benefit from their dispossession should commit ourselves to reckon with history and the legacies of colonialism. Today we strive to be responsible caretakers of the lands we stand on and build ongoing reciprocal relationships necessary for conciliation with Indigenous Peoples.
